SHANGHAI: China's controversial women's doubles pairing Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli swept into the China Open semi-finals Friday in their first tournament together since being kicked out of the London Olympics for playing to lose.
Yu retired in disgust over the Olympics row but, returning to action for the Super Series Premier event in Shanghai, combined with Wang to dispatch Japan's Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi 13-21, 21-9, 21-16.
Yu and Wang were involved in one of the Games' darker moments when they were among eight players angrily booed and then disqualified for trying to lose round-robin games in the hope of securing a favourable quarter-final draw.
Badminton chiefs pledged a thorough investigation into the incident. All the players involved have been cleared to resume competition, although the four from South Korea are still barred from their national team.
Germany's Juliane Schenk provided the night's biggest shock when she beat China's world number one Wang Yihan 19-21, 21-16, 21-17. Chinese Olympic champion Li Xuerui beat compatriot Han Li and Japan's French Open winner Mitani Minatsu downed China's Xuan Deng.
Top seeds Chen Long and Chen Jin safely reached the semi-finals in the men's singles competition -- which is missing the legendary Lin Dan, who is on a break after securing his second straight Olympic title.
In the men's doubles, China's Olympic champions Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng were sent packing by Ko Sung-Hyun and Lee Yong-Dae of South Korea. The exit of the last Chinese men's doubles pair dashes any hopes of a home sweep of all five titles.
