Korean pop rides "Gangnam Style" into U.S. music scene

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Gangnam Style," the catchy Korean song by rapper Psy, may have danced its way into the American charts but the Korean pop industry isn't horsing around when it comes to capitalizing on the singer's phenomenal U.S. success.

With "Gangnam Style" topping the current Billboard Digital Songs chart and becoming the most-watched video on YouTube ever with more than 800 million views, fellow Korean pop, or K-pop, artists are positioning themselves for similar U.S. breakthroughs.

Korea's pop music industry is thriving. Over the past two years, a handful of K-pop acts including girl group 2NE1, boy band Super Junior and nine-piece band Girls Generation have embarked on mini-promotional tours around the United States to build their audience.

"Psy has opened doors and is shining a spotlight on K-pop. People are paying attention to what's being done there," Alina Moffat, general manager at YG Entertainment group, which manages Psy, told a recent entertainment industry conference in Los Angeles.

Psy's vibrant music video, featuring his invisible pony-riding dance, also featured K-pop artists Kim Hyun-a of girl band 4Minute, and Deasung and Seungri of boy band Big Bang, all of whom are attempting to crack the U.S. market.

"YouTube has really changed the awareness of K-pop. Both American kids and second-generation Korean American kids are discovering it," Kye Kyoungbon Koo, director of the Korea Creative Content Agency, told a panel at a Billboard and Hollywood Reporter conference in Los Angeles in October.

MARKETING THE NEXT BIG THING

For U.S. companies looking to invest, K-pop is being marketed as the next big thing, boasting young, stylish and influential artists who command devoted fan followings.

Moffat said car companies and mobile phone brands were among those being courted at KCON, a convention held in October in Irvine in Southern California that showcased K-pop artists.

"Kids are coming, they're engaged, they want to spend money and sponsors saw that," Moffat said.

Whether Psy or other K-pop artists can command a global following to rival Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber or Rihanna remains to be seen, but John Shim, senior producer at MTV World, believes it is the right genre to compete with pop music's biggest names.

"K-pop admittedly is a very niche genre but I also think it's the best equipped of Asian pop to cater to the U.S. audience," Shim told Reuters.

Psy has helped to break down language barriers, keeping "Gangnam Style" in its original Korean form instead of adapting it to English when it became an international hit.

The singer told Reuters he was persuaded to keep it that way by his manager Scooter Braun, the talent scout responsible for Justin Bieber's success, who signed Psy to his record label.

"I thought, 'Should I translate this or not?' because (the fans) have got to know what I'm talking about, and lyrics are a huge part," Psy said.

CHATTING IN ENGLISH

But industry executives say at least one member of each K-Pop group is usually taught to be fluent in conversational English.

"The investment in language is costly, but effective," said Ted Kim, president of South Korean music television channel Mnet. "It really matters that Psy can go on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show and have a conversation."

Psy said he was proud his song succeeded in Korean, but he now wants to branch out into English.

"'Gangnam Style' is not the sort of thing that's going to happen twice. I've definitely got to make something in English so I can communicate with my fans right now," the singer said.

In Korea, bands such as SM Entertainment's Super Junior and Girls Generation have became branding powerhouses, scoring endorsements ranging from cosmetics, fashion, video games, electronics and beverages.

In the United States, companies such as Samsung have already jumped on the K-pop train, sponsoring Korean boy band Big Bang's U.S. tour.

But while the genre is gaining steam in the charts, it has yet to spill into ticket sales for tours, according to Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief at Pollstar.com, which tracks concert sales.

"Psy may be able to sell out arenas in Asia, but not yet here. For the American audience, he has to prove that he's more than a novelty act," Bongiovanni said.

"K-pop has to prove itself before large companies spend money on it," he added.

Iran plans new oil storage, airline hikes fares

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran is planning to build new oil storage facilities so it can store more of the fuel it is having a hard time selling due to Western sanctions over its disputed nuclear program.

State-run Press TV quoted Mahmoud Zirakchianzadeh, Director of the Iranian Offshore Oil Company, as saying nearly 8.1 million barrels will be added to Iran's crude oil storage capacity by the next summer.

Iran has the world's third largest proven oil reserves and was OPEC's second largest exporter, but sanctions have stymied the flow since summer. It slipped to the cartel's third place in July after the European Union imposed oil sanctions to force Tehran to stop its uranium enrichment program.

According to the International Energy Agency, Iran's oil exports plunged to 1 million barrels a day in July, after standing at the 1.74-million-barrel mark a month earlier. Crude oil exports account for about 80 percent of the country's foreign revenue.

The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the charges, saying its program is geared toward generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

In another sign sanctions are biting, Iran's national airline has nearly doubled prices on plane tickets for some foreign destinations. Iran Air spokesman Shahrokh Nooshabadi was quoted by local media as saying the carrier raised prices by up to 90 percent because of higher fuel prices and the plunging value of the rial against foreign currencies.

Iranian media say other airline companies have also hiked prices on flights abroad. In November, prices for Iranian domestic flights by Iran Air rose some 70 percent.

Impaired blood vessel function found in cystic fibrosis patients

AUGUSTA, Ga. The first evidence of blood vessel dysfunction has been found in a small cohort of generally healthy young people with cystic fibrosis, researchers report.

"Even though the lung function in these kids is fine at this point, there is evidence of vascular dysfunction and exercise intolerance," said Dr. Ryan A. Harris, clinical exercise physiologist at the Medical College of Georgia and Institute of Public and Preventive Health at Georgia Health Sciences University. "We think this blood vessel dysfunction could be contributing to their exercise intolerance, which is an independent predictor of mortality in these kids irrespective of their lung function."

The findings raise questions about whether dysfunctional arteries affect patients' ability to exercise, which is already recommended to help combat the disease's hallmark lung complications, and whether exercise can also improve blood vessel function and potentially help forestall cardiovascular disease.

Although their blood pressures tend to be normal and there is no established risk, cystic fibrosis patients have only recently lived long enough to acquire even an accelerated version of cardiovascular disease, said Dr. Katie T. McKie, Director of the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Center at the GHS Children's Medical Center. The median predicted age of survival is the mid-30s and nearly half the patients in the United States are over age 18, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Fifteen years ago, survival rates for the genetic disease were about half that, McKie said.

The blood vessel or endothelial dysfunction Harris and McKie found in these patients is essentially the reduced ability of blood vessels to respond to important cues, such as dilating when exercise or stress increase the body's demand for blood and oxygen. The dysfunction may be linked to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress which, in turn, impair the body's ability to use nitric oxide, a major blood vessel dilator, said Harris, corresponding author of the study in CHEST Journal.

Despite major advances in treatment and survival, cystic fibrosis patients tend to live with a chronic, low-grade inflammation resulting from a chronic state of infection. The genetic mutation that disrupts the body's balance of salt and fluid thickens lung mucus, which traps inhaled bacteria and viruses that are normally cleared.

"They are in a low-grade stage of inflammation all the time," Harris said. Patient participants in the study, for example, had a higher rate of inflammation than healthy controls and the higher their concentrations of inflammatory drivers such as C-reactive protein, the lower their pulmonary function.

When the 15 patients, age 8-18, peddled a stationary bike as long and hard as they could, it was leg fatigue rather than lung limitations, which stopped them. "It's not their lungs that are limiting their exercise capacity," Harris said. "But what about non-pulmonary factors that we had no idea existed in these kids?"

"At this stage, their lungs are as healthy as those of their healthy counterparts," McKie added.

They found that even though the patients could take in oxygen well they were not as good as their 15 healthy counterparts at using it. At rest, oxygen saturation in the patients' blood was lower. During peak exercise, the amount of oxygen they consumed was 14 percent lower while expelled air had higher oxygen levels, indicating that their muscles were not as efficient at using it.

Another telltale sign was the fact that their blood vessels simply didn't dilate as well. The researchers put a cuff on the lower arm to increase blood flow through the brachial artery, a major vessel in the bicep. How much the artery dilates in response to the increased flow when the cuff is released depends on how much nitric oxide is available and it was significantly less in patients versus controls.

Future studies are needed to determine exactly why cystic fibrosis patients appear to have less nitric oxide available and whether improving lung function and exercise capacity can improve the vascular health of patients of all ages.

MCG researchers already are doing a small pilot study giving over-the-counter antioxidants to combat oxidative stress, enhance nitric oxide availability and improve blood-vessel dilation. "If we can help improve vascular function, we can hopefully improve their ability to deliver oxygen and increase their exercise capacity," Harris said.

Maintaining good lung function typically requires multiple medications and several hours of daily therapy to break up the mucus, said McKie, a study co-author. She also encourages patients to live full, active lives. "We tell them they are going to live a full life, get married, be president, play baseball, whatever they want to do, it just takes a little extra work." Patient study participants included a swimmer, basketball, baseball and softball players. Guidelines for routine exercise testing of cystic fibrosis should be published early next year.

About 30,000 Americans have cystic fibrosis and 10 million more are carriers of the defective gene, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Endothelial dysfunction has been found in older individuals with chronic medical problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and obesity.

Stock Market Investing: What You Need To Know - Empower Network

Trading stocks can be very complex, even for the best traders. Even though there is potential to earn larges amounts of money, there are also many things that can go foul. When you use the information in this article, your investments will be wise, giving you a profit over time.

Look for a stock market investment strategy that works well for you, and stay with it. Are you looking for those businesses with high profit markets? Perhaps you?re targeting those companies with a large cash flow? You should use a strategy you understand and that corresponds to your investment goals.

TIP! A United States resident should take advantage of a Roth IRA, putting as much money into it as possible. Even middle- and working-class citizens qualify for an IRA as long as they are earning an income.

Stocks that pay out dividends are a great investment tool. Even if the stock?s value drops somewhat, you still earn money from the dividends. On the other hand, if the company?s stock goes up, dividends simply serve to increase your profit margin. They can also give you periodic income.

Buy a number of affordable stocks instead of several expensive ones. These stocks will sell easier and be easier to manage. In addition, the pressure to sell one expensive stock is eliminated, making the whole process much less stressful.

Earnings Growth

TIP! Once you have decided up on a stock, invest lightly, and don?t put all of your money on one stock. If the stock ends up plummeting in the future, your risk will be reduced.

The return you desire should influence the type of stocks you purchase, for example, if you need a high return, look to stocks that are doing better than 10%. Find projected earnings growth and dividend yield to estimate likely stock returns. Stocks yielding 4% and which have a 10% earnings growth rate may produce a return of 14%.

For United States citizens, opening and maintaining a fully-funded Roth IRA is a smart investment strategy. As long as you?re employed and have a steady stream of income coming in, you should qualify for an IRA. The tax breaks and benefits provided to this investment vehicle are substantial enough that even medium-level returns can generate large yields over the years it exists.

To make your portfolio work for you, create an investment plan or policy and put the rules in writing. The plan should include strategies about when to buy and when to sell. It should also clearly lay out what your investing budget is. This will help you to make educated choices that are backed by knowledge, rather than emotion.

TIP! If you would like to save cash, try online stock trading. Internet stock trading firms tend to be cheaper than brokerage firms.

Constantly review your portfolio. Watch what your stocks are doing, which are doing well and which aren?t, and consider what you need to do to keep it in order. This evaluation should not be done daily, and it should take into consideration the short term volatility and long term stability of the market.

When diversifying your stock portfolio, remember that you can diversify in many ways besides just varying sectors. Additionally, you do not need to fit every strategy or factor into your portfolio investment strategy. Try to arrange a variety of stocks from all different sectors and different criteria, in order to get the best financial gain.

You should understand your stop point on a stock that you own. When your stocks have reached this point, sell them. However, if you believe these stocks will go up again, keep them and wait. However, selling to minimize your losses is usually the best choice.

TIP! When looking at stocks, don?t always look at high-priced companies, with eye-popping PE ratios. Look at steady, lower-priced stocks as well.

Subscribe to a quality investment service. One quality stock market service should be all you need. The service should help you to pick stocks, and also assist in maintaining your portfolio and making trades. When the profits start to roll in, the investment in the service more than covers the cost.

You will want to educate yourself on accounting and money management principles before jumping into the stock market. While you certainly don?t need an accounting degree, taking a few classes in basic principals can?t hurt. By taking some classes, you?ll understand how stocks are scored, which can help you make better decisions about buying and selling stock. Warren Buffet recommends such an education and with his level of success, he is a man that deserves to be listened to.

Stock Market Investments

TIP! Work with a stock broker. They will help you make better financial decisions.

As stated here, there are many strategies that can diversify risk and help keep your stock market investments safer. Use this advice to make safer and more successful stock market investments.

Yoga Treatment Therapy For Substance Abuse

To increase their odds in the battle against substance abuse, many individuals look for help in the form of various treatment methods. Traditionally, these methods include counseling, group therapy and inpatient addiction treatment. Recently, however, alternative therapies like yoga, meditation, nutrition therapy and hypnosis have gained popularity in the treatment of addiction. Typically, alternative therapies are used as complimentary treatments, and are designed to supplement more traditional methods of addiction treatment.

Yoga has many significant benefits for both the body and mind when it comes to recovering from substance abuse. For the mind, yoga provides calm and helps to counteract some of the negative thoughts and emotions associated with addiction. These emotions include anger, self-loathing and shame, and are often linked to harmful behaviors like substance abuse, and typically intensify as addiction progresses. Yoga can greatly reduce the occurrence of negative thoughts of feelings, and can therefore reduce the risk of depression, anxiety and other psychological disorders often experienced by addicts.

Those addicted to prescription painkillers, amphetamines, alcohol and other substances often suffer great physical trauma as a result of their addictions. Traditional treatments typically focus on the mental aspects of addiction rather than the physical. And while addressing psychological and emotional factors is essential, omitting physical treatments can be detrimental to recovery. The physical trauma done by addictive substances can be severe, and yoga can help reverse some of this damage by restoring the system and improving overall health and body function.

Yoga can also be performed during the detoxification stage of substance abuse treatment. Detox is an integral aspect of treatment, and involves ridding the system of all addictive substances. In some cases, this process can be quite painful and intense. Yoga can help speed up the detox process so that the next stages of treatment can begin. For detoxification purposes, certain forms of yoga are more beneficial than others. Ahstanga and Bikram yoga methods, for example, are extremely intense and speed up detoxification by ridding the body of unwanted substances through profuse sweating.

Pain relief is another great benefit of yoga in the treatment of addiction. Many substances, such as opiates and prescription painkillers, lead to severe pain when use is discontinued. Yoga can help decrease pain and increase feelings of well-being by upping the body?s production of natural painkillers such as dopamine and endorphins. In addition to pain relief, these chemicals are also linked to improved mood and positive thinking.

In addition to benefiting the initial stages of addiction recovery, there is also evidence that yoga can increase an individual?s chances of maintaining sobriety. This could be due to a number of factors, including the discipline and improved self-esteem associated with yoga. Self-esteem is a powerful tool in achieving and maintaining sobriety, and yoga can lead to enormous boosts in both mental and physical self-confidence.

When used in conjunction with traditional treatment methods like counseling, yoga and other alternative therapies further increase an addict?s chances of recovery from substance abuse. No matter an individual?s skill level or which type of yoga they choose to perform, the benefits are great.

Lillian Sanders is a freelance writer from Florida. Aside from writing, Lillian works closely with holistic drug rehab programs helping people struggling with addiction.

Laws don't curb pricey prostate cancer treatments

NEW YORK | Fri Nov 23, 2012 4:54pm EST

(Reuters Health) ? Laws meant to prevent the overuse of expensive healthcare services don?t stop doctors from using pricey prostate cancer treatments, according to two new studies.

Researchers found doctors used robots and special radiation to treat prostate cancer regardless of whether their area had laws requiring government approval before money is spent on healthcare facilities and new equipment.

?Certificate of need laws were designed to align public need with use of different services,? said Dr. Bruce Jacobs, a lead author of one of the studies from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The U.S. government required states to implement the laws in the 1970s and early 1980s, but stopped a few decades ago. Still, some states continue to use the laws in an effort to control costs.

In each study, the researchers looked at treatments for prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in American men.

The American Cancer Society estimates that one in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, but most will not die from it. Past research found that many men?s prostate cancer is slow-growing, and most are candidates for active surveillance or ?watchful waiting.?

In Jacobs?s study, the researchers looked at whether states with strict laws ? those that require approval for even low-cost equipment ? used robotic surgery to remove fewer prostates than states with less strict or no laws.

Jacobs and his colleagues write in The Journal of Urology that the price of such robots, and the questions surrounding whether or not robotic surgery to remove a prostate is better than the old-fashioned way should make it an ?ideal target? for review under the laws.

In September, for example, one of the studies that have questioned the usefulness of robotic surgery found that men who had robotic surgery ended up having fewer short-term complications, but questioned its long-term benefits and whether the hefty price tag of $1.5 million in startup costs is worth it. (see Reuters Health article of Sep. 12, 2012:)

But another recent study found robotic surgery led to fewer complications, fewer readmissions to the hospital, and fewer deaths due to surgery than traditional methods, according to Intuitive Surgical, the maker of the da Vinci Surgical System.

?That is significant for the patient and for reducing overall costs to the system,? wrote Angela Wonson, a spokesperson for Intuitive Surgical, in an email to Reuters Health.

Overall, in the new study, the use of robotic surgery to remove prostates in Medicare patients increased regardless of whether there were strict, less strict or no laws in place. Also, the chance a surgeon used robots had nothing to do with the laws.

RADIATION AND COSTS

A second study by another group of researchers looked at whether the laws limited the use of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) or slowed the growth of healthcare costs related to prostate cancer.

IMRT allows doctors to focus radiation beams onto the cancer without harming healthy tissue.

However, the researchers write that IMRT is costly and ? to their knowledge ? has not been compared to other prostate cancer treatments in a randomized controlled trial, which is considered the ?gold standard? of medical research.

In a group of Medicare patients, Dr. Ganesh Palapattu, the chief of urologic oncology at the University of Michigan and the study?s senior researcher, found that areas with the laws actually saw greater growth in IMRT use.

Palapattu and his colleagues found that IMRT use increased from about 2 percent of all prostate cancer treatments in 2002 to almost half in 2009 in areas with the laws.

In areas without the laws, IMRT use increased from about 11 percent of all prostate cancer treatments to about 42 percent over the same time span.

The laws also didn?t seem to help control prostate cancer treatment costs when the researchers compared the price to treat one person with prostate cancer in states with laws, compared to states without laws.

Palapattu told Reuters Health that it may be time to reevaluate the regulations.

?If the goal is to limit the overutilization of more expensive therapies and to improve efficacy or health, then we have to reexamine how we?re doing this,? he said.

Jacobs told Reuters Health that there is more research to be done, because his group?s study did not look at how many applications for equipment may have been turned down by the states? approval board.

?I think if we really want to get to the bottom of how effective these (laws) are, the next step is to really look closely at each state?s process of review,? he said.

Palapattu said he?d also like to see if the findings are the same for non-Medicare patients. But, for now, he said men with prostate cancer should talk to their doctors about which treatment is right for them.

?Newer isn?t always better, and it?s important to have a meaningful conversation with your physician on treatment options and which one might be best for you and why,? he said.

Thread: Shop Made Miter Clamping Helpers - Family Woodworking

I've seen others here use these, both shop made and commercial versions. My last set finally got tired and went to that big burn pile in the sky. When making a new batch I thought I'd make enough to take dad a set. I take a piece of hardwood stock about 1-1/2" square and 8-1/4" long and rip it at a 45* angle on the bandsaw to create two long triangle shaped block. I glue these to a scrap of 1/4" BB ply.

Once the glue is dry I rip them into 1-1/4" wide strips. Then I crosscut them into two equal lengths.

They are made to assist in gluing 45* miters but, the example gives you the idea even though it lacks the mitered meeting points.

Overall length is just shy of 7". The important dimension is the "tail" that should be at least 4-1/2" long so that you can clamp without your clamps running into each other.

Gadgets worth buying ? even if they're not on sale

1 day

Black Friday's over, but the shopping frenzy continues. Even so, there are some?gadgets that never seem to end up on discount table. These are?the best products of the moment, and you can?buy them ? even if they're not on sale ? without feeling an ounce of regret.

We've selected these gadgets (and gift-worthy?premium?services) through our own?firsthand experience, along with insight from fellow technology reporters and other tech-savvy colleagues.?Most are options that make sense in any circumstance, but a few recommendations?are better suited for certain people (for instance, Android fans, T-Mobile customers, etc.). The goal is for you to have a "safe" list: These are indisputably the best tech options of the moment for your loved ones ? or yourself.?

Apple iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 is the best smartphone choice on the market right now. (And good thing too, because?if you favor iOS, it's really your only option.) It's ridiculously slender and light, but makes no compromises when it comes to performance and battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S III
Those who prefer Android should feel comfortable snagging a Galaxy S III. While the phone would have been even better if Samsung hadn't slapped so many embellishments?on top of the pure?Android OS,?it's a solid device with a large, bright screen and a snappy processor.

Google?Nexus 4?by LG
You can find the Samsung Galaxy S III on all U.S. carriers, but the?impressive Nexus 4 only runs on T-Mobile and AT&T in this country. Google's newest?smartphone has the latest, purest version of Android, 4.2 Jelly Bean, with features like Photo Sphere panoramic shooting and wireless display video streaming.?And since it's Google's own baby,?it's bound to be first in line for the next Android?operating system upgrade, too.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
NBC News' Wilson Rothman declared the Kindle Paperwhite "the new king of e-readers" when he reviewed it.?It has great contrast that comes as a result of an innovative integrated lighting system. You still get the easy-on-the-eyes readability and impressively long battery life, but no more need for an Itty Bitty Book Light. ($119 for Wi-Fi-only model, $179 with Wi-Fi and 3G.)

Apple iPad (4th generation)
Though the iPad Mini has received most of the attention this season, we're not recommending it for now?because ? as lovely as the new size and shape is ? the screen should have higher resolution. We are recommending the newest iPad, however: It?maintains all the clever design touches and excellent battery life?of the prior generation, but runs even faster. Pricing starts at $499.

Google?Nexus 7?by Asus
The Nexus 7 is a lightweight,?high-performance tablet that delivers a pure Android experience to people who prefer that platform. While we don't feel that there are enough tablet-specific Android?apps to make any of those devices viable competitors to the iPad, this 7-inch tablet, starting at $199, is a best-in-class vehicle for Web, email and all of?Google's own services.?

Amazon Kindle Fire HD
For $199, the Kindle Fire HD makes a lot of sense for?media consumption,?especially if you're already in love with Amazon and its $70-per-year Prime media service. (Just don't?expect to be editing photos and?working on spreadsheets on this, like you can on an iPad.)?The 7-inch?tablet's a decent improvement on its predecessor, and the all-new?8.9-inch version is a solid step up for just $299.

Apple 13-inch MacBook Air
Choosing a laptop can seem difficult, but for most people, an ultra-light device with speedy guts is the way to go. Unless you're someone who does incredibly processor-intensive work ? or desperately needs a DVD drive ? the 13-inch MacBook Air, starting at $1,199, is the best bet. (Why else would so many PC makers try to copy it?)

AirPort Express
The router provided by your Internet service provider is typically a pain in the rump to deal with. If you're finally ready to accept that it's time to look elsewhere, then Apple's $99?AirPort Express is the router you should pick up. It's ridiculously simple to set up and you won't have to think about it much after the day you unbox it.

Spotify subscription
You want music. And you want lots of it. Instead of purchasing songs a la carte or forking money over for every album you download, you should sign up for a premium Spotify subscription for $9.99/month. You'll have access to millions and millions of tracks, instantly, and even be able to store them locally on your mobile device or computer for off-line play.

Amazon Prime subscription
Purchasing movie or TV show downloads quickly leads to a long credit card statement, but with a $70-per-year Amazon Prime subscription, you'll have access to a huge library of streaming video. On top of that, you'll also get free shipping on most items. If you own a Kindle, Prime also gives you "free"?book borrowing, including bestsellers like the Harry Potter series.

Netflix subscription
If you're not prone to shopping on Amazon and couldn't care less about getting free shipping with your video streaming service, then the $7.99-per-month?Netflix is the choice for you. Besides, its movie library is more impressive than Amazon's, at least for now.

Canon PowerShot S110
Canon's S-series cameras have gained a reputation for being the best point-and-shoot devices on the market. If you're not content with the photos your phone spits out and want the kind of manual control usually reserved for DSLRs, then the latest PowerShot S110 (between $400 and $450 retail) is?ideal. (And?if you can live without the S110's touchscreen and the built-in Wi-Fi, you can find the otherwise identical PowerShot?S100 on sale now.)

Canon EOS Rebel T4i
Canon's T4i represented a big jump ahead for the affordable?Rebel series of DSLRs. Its new processor ?delivers speed and low-light performance previously seen only in pro cameras, and its?HD video shooting is the best in its price range (it's around $800 retail). Unless you have a bunch of Nikon lenses, there's really no reason not to pick up one of these.

Nikon D600
Speaking of Nikon, the D600 is just right?for dedicated amateur photographers who want a full-frame DSLR but don't want to pay through the nose (the camera plus 24-85mm lens retails for around $2,500). It has all the features you'd want from a higher-end DSLR and a nifty viewfinder which offers 100 percent coverage (unlike many cheaper models).

Panasonic Lumix TS4
While you take most of your pictures with your phone, you get nervous taking it out at the beach or at the pool. One grain of sand or drop of water, and it's "bye?bye, smartphone." That's where the TS4 comes in. Whether you're way into extreme sports or just have kids, a rugged camera like this?is a great thing to have on hand. (Retail price between $200 and $250.)

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Knight in talks for market-making unit sale: sources

(Reuters) - Knight Capital Group Inc is in talks about possibly selling its market-making operation, its largest and most profitable business, but it is not known if a deal will happen, a source said on Saturday.

The securities firm has been approached by at least two rivals about its market-making operation, which uses complicated computer models to match buy and sell orders in stocks and options, another source familiar with the matter said.

Knight's board of directors is expected to get separate proposals next week for the market-making business from high-speed trading firms Getco LLC and Virtu Financial LLC, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people who were briefed on the discussions. Other potential buyers also could approach the board about that business and perhaps others, it said.

Knight has virtually all of its customers back after a massive August trading glitch and could decide to keep the business, one of the sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Knight said it does not comment on rumors and speculation.

Getco and Virtu spokespeople declined comment on the report.

In October, Knight Capital posted a third-quarter loss of $389.9 million following a massive software glitch.

On August 1, Knight, one of the biggest executors of U.S. stock trades, went live with new software that had been improperly installed. The software conflicted with old code that was to have been deleted, unleashing a flood of orders to the New York Stock Exchange, and leaving Knight with a massive position it had to unload at a loss.

Children of same-sex parents fare poorly

Conventional wisdom is that children of same-sex parents do as well as, or even better than children from intact, two-parent married households.?Many studies make that assertion.

It is massively wrong according to a new, very large, thorough study published this week by the journal Social Science Research. It was written by Mark Regnerus, a scholar at the University of Texas. The New Family Structures Study, or NFSS, is a breakthrough report.

Regnerus compares how young adult children, aged 18-39, of a parent who has had a same-sex relationship fare on 40 different social, emotional and relational outcomes when compared with traditional and other families.

The biggest differences were between children of women who have had a lesbian relationship ? and those raised by still-married biological parents.

Fully 69 percent of those with lesbian mothers were on welfare as children ? four times the 17 percent in intact families ever had that experience.?In fact, 38 percent of the adult children of lesbian mothers are currently on welfare versus only 10 percent of those with married parents. That?s the same 4-1 ratio.

Only 8 percent of adult children from intact homes were unemployed when interviewed in 2011 versus 28 percent with a lesbian parent.

What?s most shocking is that only two people of those with married parents were ever touched sexually by a parent or an adult ? while 23 percent of those with a lesbian mother had that experience!?Golly, they are 11 times more apt to be molested!

The design of the NFSS research was brilliant.

Most research on the impact of homosexual parenting has relied on interviews with same-sex parents who are from convenience samples.? For example, the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study conducted last year ?recruited entirely from self-selection from announcements posted at lesbian events, in women?s bookstores and in lesbian newspapers in Boston, Washington and San Francisco.?

Such a sample is biased toward including better-educated, wealthier people who visit bookstores.?What about the less educated or less likely to be employed? They aren?t interviewed.?Of course, the children of these more affluent parents are more apt to do well.

By comparison, NFSS asked 3,000 young adults if either of their parents had a same-sex relationship while they were growing up.?Result: 175 reported their mother was in a homosexual relationship, and 73 said the same about their father. That?s about 1.7 percent, a figure comparable to other studies.?The sampling was so carefully done that it included both those with listed phone numbers and those who only use cell phones (about half the total).

Only 23 percent said they had spent at least three years in the same household with a romantic partner of their mother; an additional 57 percent did so for at least four months.

Among those with a father in a homosexual relationship, fewer than 2 percent said they had spent at least three years in that household. These relationships are much more volatile and short lived, but neither compares with the stability of married heterosexual parents.

Also, by interviewing young adults of homosexual parents, we can see how the experience shaped their adult lives.?This is vastly more useful information than asking volunteer same-sex parents if their kids are doing well.? Of course, they say yes.

More results: Three times as many young adults of lesbians were currently cohabiting as those with married parents (24 percent versus 9 percent). Even more young adults (31 percent) of divorced parents were living together. Twice as many from intact homes were employed full time as those with lesbian mothers.

Only 5 percent of those with married parents had considered suicide in the past year versus 12 percent of those with lesbian parents and 24 percent with homosexual fathers. That?s five times those from intact homes. Similarly, a young adult of married parents is less than half as likely to be in therapy ?for a problem connected with anxiety, depression, or relationships? ? as those with homosexual parents (8 percent versus 19 percent).

Only 12 percent of young adults with married parents had ever cheated while married or cohabiting, but a big 40 percent of adult children of lesbians had done so.

Just 8 percent of those from intact homes had ever been forced to have sex against their will versus 31 percent with lesbian parents and 25 percent of ?gay? parents.

These are huge differences.

They should be cited by those opposed to same-sex marriages.

In the last two weeks, I helped gather signatures for a statewide referendum on whether to reverse a vote by the Maryland Legislature legalizing same-sex marriage.

I hope this information will give fresh ammunition to those trying to protect traditional marriage ? and children.

Online Marketing DNA Unleashes Social Media Marketing for Small ...

Online Marketing DNA (OMDNA) has now expanded their set of Internet marketing packages to include social media coaching. This gives small business owners a way to learn how to harness the power of networking to strengthen customer relations and establish a greater online presence.

?Business owners often get confused and overwhelmed by all the social media options out there,? says Simon Volkov, OMDNA founder. ?Our approach is to work one-on-one with clients to help them build social networks in their specific niche.?

It seems that digital interconnectedness has infused all aspects of society today, and owners need to tap into as many channels as possible to connect with consumers. No longer are Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter sufficient. Yet it is difficult for entrepreneurs to keep up.

Fortunately, social media training provides a way to improve networking mastery of even lesser known resources. And it is also the most efficient approach to get the essential understanding every business owner needs to engage with customers and create that powerful interactive presence he knows is crucial.

The first step is to develop a plan that targets the optimal social media networks for one?s marketing niche and that identifies how to invest resources and time. This is where social media marketing coaching comes in, affording owners rapid implementation and avoidance of costly pitfalls.

?Entrepreneurs who get social media training receive valuable guidance from a mentor and road map, saving them time and money,? says Volkov. ?This helps them to arrive at their destination more quickly.?

OMDNA is actually offering two coaching packages. One is direct individualized coaching person-to-person and the other is social media marketing video training . Clients also have the option to enroll in both programs.

These packages are customized and designed to improve entrepreneurial networking skills so that they can convert contacts into paying customers. The personal coaching option is especially appropriate for those unfamiliar with social media and for people who desire to keep on top of ever-evolving strategies.

?Social media networking is a very powerful and affordable way to market products and services and to wage an online advertising campaign,? says Volkov. ?A strong understanding of best practices is key to success.?

Everybody achieves better results with a mentor guiding him along the path of implementing proven marketing strategies. Capitalizing on social media marketing training bypasses the costly trials and tribulations of going alone. Small business owners also find this an enjoyable way to come up to speed.

OMDNA restricts the size of its clientele so that maximum attention is granted to each owner. Reserve one of the few openings soon to be available or get your name on the waiting list for later coaching sessions.

About Online Marketing DNA

Online Marketing DNA (OMDNA) helps businesses achieve their highest potential in gaining a strong Internet presence. Their social media coaching packages show entrepreneurs how to master online networking. Act now to take advantage of this valuable offer.

Tata Steel to cut 900 jobs in Britain

LONDON (Reuters) - India's Tata Steel said on Friday it would cut 900 jobs across Britain as part of a restructuring plan aimed at stemming losses in weak European markets.

The group said 580 jobs would go at its Port Talbot plant in south Wales as part of proposals to restructure its management and administrative functions. It also plans to close 12 steel finishing and processing sites in England and Wales.

"Today's proposals are part of a strategy to transform ourselves into an ?all-weather' steel producer, capable of succeeding in difficult economic conditions," said Karl Koehler, the chief executive of Tata Steel's European operations.

Tata, which supplies steel and related services to construction, automotive and aerospace markets among others, also announced that it would re-start one of two blast furnaces at Port Talbot early next year as part of a 250 million pounds ($398.7 million) investment programme.

This month the firm swung to a second quarter loss of $67 million, as weakening demand and prices in its main European market, which accounts for around two thirds of its 28 million tonne capacity, offset a solid home performance.

The $500-billion-a-year steel industry has slowed sharply this year as moderation in China's economic growth has compounded weak demand in Europe, forcing the Mumbai-based group, to make a string of cuts in the business.

ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, recently reported a quarterly loss, while Japan's Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp said that profit in the second half of 2012/13 would fall by more than 50 percent from the previous year.

The Tata conglomerate, which bought Anglo-Dutch steel producer Corus for $13.1 billion in 2008, employs some 81,000 staff worldwide.

This is the Modem World: We're all a bunch of cranky old men

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World We're All a Bunch of Cranky Old Men

I've been studying online communities since 1994, believe it or not. My master's thesis was called "Escape to Cyberia: Subcultures as Agents of Change." Go ahead, make fun of me for the title. It's cool.

But back then, no one -- or at least, very few people -- studied online communities as fodder for social science. I set out to prove that people could actually form social bonds and even social structures -- in this case subcultures -- online. I then went on to show that what happens online can affect what happens in the "real world." Several professors at the University of Chicago thought I was insane -- "Real world vs. online? What is this, 'Tron?!'" -- but I aligned myself with a forward-thinker named David Laitin who, too, was ready to accept our future robot overlords.

At the time, Usenet wasn't the dark, gritty back alley of the internet that it is now. Newsgroups were full of discussion, moderation and netiquette. They were, if you will, "where it was at." I was a daily contributor and reader of alt.mountain-bike, where at least 100 new messages about trails, bike maintenance and burritos kept my attention. It was, you might say, just like Reddit. Sorta.

No. 13 Oklahoma beats West Virginia 50-49

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? West Virginia couldn't stop Oklahoma's Landry Jones. Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey ran circles around the Sooners' defense.

In a wild finish, Jones got the last laugh.

Jones' 5-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills with 24 seconds left lifted No. 13 Oklahoma to a 50-49 win over West Virginia on Saturday night.

Jones finished with 554 yards passing to break his own school record. His six TD passes tied another mark he holds. He needed a terrific game to offset the performances of Austin and Bailey.

Austin rushed for a school-record 344 yards and set a Big 12 record with 572 all-purpose yards. Bailey had 13 catches for 205 yards and four touchdowns.

"I'm incredibly proud of the team for holding it together as they did and to come back," said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. "Landry Jones, to lead those drives at the end of the game, such great precision and execution throwing strikes. (The) receivers made tough competitive catches and all of it together was really pleasing to come back and win away from home."

Oklahoma (8-2, 6-1 Big 12) had its conference title chances revived with No. 2 Kansas State's 52-24 loss to Baylor.

"It proves in this league, you can get beat by anybody on any given day, and every team in this league has the capability of beating you if you don't come out to play," Jones said.

The Wildcats (10-1, 7-1) beat the Sooners earlier this season and can still clinch the league's automatic Bowl Championship Series berth with a win on Dec. 1 against No. 18 Texas or with another Oklahoma loss.

Oklahoma has games left against Oklahoma State next Saturday and at TCU on Dec. 1. Any loss also would eliminate the Sooners from consideration for an at-large BCS bowl berth.

Oklahoma improved to 4-0 in road games this season. The Sooners also beat Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

It marked the first time in 16 tries that Oklahoma overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to win dating to 2007. The win moved Stoops within 10 of Barry Switzer's school record of 157.

"They ended up making one more play than we did," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said.

West Virginia (5-5, 2-5) lost its fifth straight game. After starting the season 5-0, the Mountaineers are still searching for an elusive sixth one to become bowl eligible.

The losing streak is the Mountaineers' worst since they lost six straight in 1986. It also was West Virginia's third loss at home this season. The last time that occurred was 2001.

The teams combined for 1,440 yards. The 778 yards surrendered by Oklahoma were the most in school history, surpassing the 616 yards allowed in a loss to Baylor last year.

West Virginia has failed to reach 100 yards rushing in its previous three games, so Holgorsen stuck Austin, a wide receiver, in the backfield.

"They just finally gave me the chance and I just took advantage of it," Austin said.

Austin broke the rushing mark of 337 yards set by Kay-Jay Harris against East Carolina in 2004. He also topped the Big 12 all-purpose yards mark of 375 set by Hollis Mitchell of Texas in 2000 against Kansas and the school record of 356 set by Garrett Ford against Pittsburgh in 1965.

Stoops called Austin's performance one of the best he's seen in the Big 12.

"He's right up there with anybody," Stoops said.

Geno Smith went 20 of 35 for 320 yards and four scores for the Mountaineers. He became the first quarterback to surpass 300 yards against the Sooners this season.

Oklahoma couldn't hang onto a 31-17 halftime lead. The teams combined for 31 points in the fourth quarter, including four touchdowns over the final seven minutes.

Austin's 54-yard run, plus a pair of Oklahoma penalties on the play, gave West Virginia the ball at the Oklahoma 8. Smith then lofted a ball that Bailey caught in the left corner of the end zone, and the Mountaineers had their first lead at 43-38 with 7:12 left.

Stills finished with 10 catches for 91 yards and four scores. His 7-yard TD grab with 4:10 left gave the lead back to the Sooners, only to have Bailey cap a three-play, 92-yard drive with a 40-yard TD grab with 2:53 left, his third of the quarter.

That was plenty of time for the Sooners, who took over at their 46 after Brennan Clay's long kickoff return.

Jones hit Justin Brown with a 36-yard pass. A 10-yarder to Brown put the ball at the West Virginia 14. On fourth-and-3 at the 5, Jones changed the play at the line and found Stills on a slant for the go-ahead score.

"Landry audibled out to for the touchdown and Kenny ran a great route," Stoops said. "He fought his way to the inside position and those are tough catches."

Smith's desperation pass as time ran out fell incomplete just short of the end zone.

Whether it was a case of drinking and tweeting, jumping to conclusions, overt optimism, or the ever popular account being hacker, the University of Maryland's official twitter account, @UofMaryland, had some interesting, rather pointed things to say about the Terrapins' potential move to the Big Ten Saturday evening.

The account began tweeting at 9:56 PM eastern standard time and then proceeded to tweet around every five minutes for the next twenty minutes opining for a prospective move to the Big Ten Conference. The account, which has over 15,354 followers, then strategically deleted two of the tweets, before ultimately getting rid of all four. We preserved the tweets for posterity sake, and while it's unclear whom exactly mans the account (if it's a student/intern of any kind, they may want to pray for mercy if it wasn't a case of identity theft), it should be interesting to see if this a smoke screen of sorts or if someone was openly speculated based on some kind of privileged information they may have been privy to.

The tweets in question were as follows:
