Elk Petroleum's potential 24 million barrel oil recovery project receives milestone approval

Pdf Monday, July 30, 2012 by Bevis Yeo

?s (ASX: ELK) environmental assessment for the Grieve enhanced oil recovery project that targets up to 24 million barrels of oil has been approved by the United States Government.
??? ???
Operator Denbury Resources, an experienced EOR producer, will now be able to mobilise construction crews for the installation of a new carbon dioxide supply pipeline to the field with first CO2 injection expected in November 2012.

First oil from the project is expected in the middle of 2014.

Other work to be carried out include the installation of CO2 distribution and production gathering throughout the Grieve field; demolition of existing but superfluous processing and storage facilities; and site works for the new processing and storage facilities.

Sixteen existing well workovers have already been completed, including nine CO2 injection wells and three production wells.

Besides increasing oil recovery from the Grieve field, the CO2 injection will also serve to sequester CO2 gas.

Denbury owns the largest reserves of CO2 used for tertiary oil recovery east of the Mississippi River and currently produces more than 30,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from its CO2 EOR projects.

Debt Consolidation Lender | YodZiaN.CoM - Finance and Loan ...

Debt can cause great stress and depression, especially when you are trapped deep in debt with no prospect of escape. You get to the stage where you wonder whether you?ll ever get out of debt.

But when you hear the promises that all of these debt consolidation companies make, it seems like the answer to all your problems. Then you consider all the horror stories you?ve heard about people who fall prey to unscrupulous debt consolidation lenders and end up owing even more money.

Debt consolidation can work, if you find the right lender for your circumstances. But it takes time and effort to research which lender to use. So here are the most important things to bear in mind when looking for a debt consolidation lender.

One of the biggest problems is that many debt consolidation lenders are specialist companies that operate in a specific niche, which means that you might not have heard of them. So how can you tell which companies are reputable?

The best way to find a reputable consolidation lender is to use a lending broker, such as a mortgage broker. If they don?t have relevant experience of the debt consolidation market, they will have a broad understanding of your situation and be able to put you in contact with a broker who can help. If you can find a local broker with knowledge of the debt consolidation market, they will have various contacts and should be able to recommend a reputable lender.

Alternatively, you could seek advice from a broker who specialises in debt consolidation loans. They will be better placed to advise you of the best options for your circumstances and will have contact with the most appropriate lenders. They will also act on your behalf so you should be able to approach the situation with more confidence than if you were approaching the lenders directly.

You will be able to ask your broker any questions about the consolidation process that you are unsure about. The most important things to check are the interest rate, the term of the loan and any penalties that exist.

The only downside with using a specialist broker is that they fees may be slightly higher than a general broker. These fees will generally be paid by the commission that they receive from the loan company that they put you in touch with. So ultimately, you will pay their fees through the setup fees you pay to your new lender. However, as I said, they should be able to get you a better deal than a general broker, so you should benefit in the long run.

Just remember that your choice of debt consolidation lender can make the difference between getting out of debt and sinking deeper into the red. Choose your lender carefully and you could escape from your growing debts in a shorter time that you thought possible.

Aleppo assault 'nail in Assad's coffin': Panetta

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday that the assault on his own population in Aleppo would be a nail in his coffin.

Fighting raged on the second day of a fierce government offensive, as the United Nations said 200,000 civilians had fled and many were trapped after Assad deployed tanks and attack helicopters to try to dislodge the rebels.

The Syrian opposition says government forces are preparing to carry out "massacres" and is pleading the international community to provide heavy weapons to enable rebels to meet the regime onslaught.

"It's pretty clear that Aleppo is another tragic example of the kind of indiscriminate violence that the Assad regime has committed against its own people," Panetta told reporters on a military plane en route to Tunisia.

"And in many ways, if they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people in Aleppo, I think ultimately it will be a nail in Assad's coffin," he said.

"He's just assuring that the Assad regime will come to an end by virtue of the kind of violence they're committing against their own people."

According to Panetta, Assad has "lost all legitimacy, and the more violence he engages in, the more he makes the case that the regime is coming to an end."

It's no longer a question of whether the regime will fall, "it's when," he added.

More than 20,000 people have been killed, including 14,000 civilians, since the uprising against Assad's rule erupted in March 2011, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The United States and the international community have made very clear that this is intolerable, and have brought diplomatic and economic pressure on Syria to stop this kind of violence, to have Assad step down and to transition to a democratic form of government," Panetta said.

Obama, waging a tough domestic battle ahead of the November 6 election, has demanded that Assad stand down and offered logistical support to the opposition, but his administration has ruled out using force.

International efforts to squeeze Assad by isolating his regime and seeking sanctions against his inner circle have been frustrated by Russian and Chinese opposition at the UN Security Council.

Panetta said the United States was paying particular attention to securing Syria's chemical and biological weapon sites, especially by maintaining "close cooperation with countries in the region."

His trip to Tunisia is the first stop of an international tour that will also take him to Egypt, Israel and Jordan.

Bret Michaels, Kristi Gibson call off engagement

By Us Weekly

Darryl Webb / AP file

After nearly 18 on-and-off years together, Bret Michaels and Kristi Gibson are "off" -- for good. The pair "have called off their engagement at this time," a rep for the rocker, 49, tells Us Weekly in a statement. "Although the couple have separated they remain great friends and are committed to jointly raising their two daughters, Raine Elizabeth and Jorja Bleu."

Photos from Us: Bret's rockin' days

Michaels proposed to Gibson, the mother of his children, in 2010, during the finale of his VH1 reality show, "Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It."

The Poison frontman got down on one knee, begging Gibson to agree to make their commitment to one another official. "Please say yes or the rejection will kill me right now," he told her.

Gibson stayed by Michaels' side as he recovered from his terrifying brain hemorrhage and stroke earlier that year.

Photos from Us: Engagements of the year

"She's the one who put up with me all these years," the singer told Us at the time of his then-bride-to-be, adding that, after Gibson accepted his proposal, they ran to share their happy news with their daughters. "[I told them] 'I did it! We'll all be together forever! Family hug!'"

10 reasons to drop Windows for Mountain Lion

2 hrs.

I guess you could say I started cheating on Windows back in October of 2010. That?s when Apple debuted the revamped?MacBook Air. For the first time, I could resume working almost as soon as I flipped the lid on a laptop, thanks to the way the?notebook?leveraged its flash memory. (Intel and?Ultrabook?makers wouldn?t offer a similar instant-on experience until a year later.)

The Air was a work of art, but it didn?t feel complete until?OS X Lion?arrived last year. With key time-saving features like Auto Save and Mission Control for faster multitasking, I started leaving behind my Windows notebook more and more.?Now that?Mountain Lion?is here, I may never look back. Here are 10 reasons why you might want to do the same.

iCloud Keeps Devices, Files in Sync

Make a change on a Pages document in Mountain Lion and iCloud will automatically update it on your iPad. It doesn't get any easier than that if you happen to own Apple's slate. You don't even have to think about whether to bring your MacBook or iPad with you when you leave the house, because everything is already in sync.

iCloud also keeps your Numbers and Keynote files up to date, and neatly presents all of your recent documents when you open any of the above apps. I just wish Apple's iWork suite could automatically save docs as Office-friendly versions by default for sharing with Windows users; instead, you have to check off a box every time.

Reminders App Uses Your Location

What's the point of putting together a to-do list if you're not going to follow through? The Reminders app in Mountain Lion vastly increases the chances you're going to cross more stuff off by the end of the day.

For starters, you can pin any list to your desktop just by double-clicking it, so you'll be less likely to ignore those tasks. Second ? and this is a biggie for me ? you can add a location to specific reminders. For example, just this morning I set a reminder to pick up my TransitChek card for when I arrived at work, and my iPhone buzzed as I emerged from the subway. I have no excuses now.

AirPlay Mirroring Transforms TV?

Usually when I pull out my laptop out at home, the kids moan and groan that daddy is about to do work again. But Mountain Lion's AirPlay Mirroring feature instantly changed their minds. With a single click I started streaming photos I took at a nearby park to an Apple TV. Then I streamed a trailer for "Ice Age 4" from YouTube.

Even better, I could mirror a game of ?RC Mini Racers? from the Mac to my HDTV, and within seconds the kids wanted to take over. AirPlay Mirroring is so simple to set up compared to Intel's WiDi and any DLNA solution on the Windows side, I can easily see Apple TVs popping up in classrooms and conference rooms.

Speak to Type

Take this down, Microsoft. Mountain Lion converts your words into text anywhere you can type. This is a great way to compose memos, emails or even tweet when your hands are full. It couldn?t be easier to start dictating. Just double tap the Function key to bring up a little microphone, then tap it again to finish. While we wish dictation worked offline, it has proved accurate in our testing, including punctuation.

Send and Receive Texts from the Desktop

When I?m at work I find texts on my iPhone pretty distracting, so I welcome the new Messages application for Mountain Lion. It integrates iMessages and all of your favorite IM clients (AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo, Jabber, etc.) into a single app. This way I can communicate with my wife when she?s on her iPhone right from the desktop. And if she sends me a photo I can double-click it to make it bigger and then share it on Facebook.

Game Center: Take That, Xbox

There?s no question that Windows still trumps the Mac when it comes to the number of games available, but Mountain Lion brings a secret weapon. With Game Center your Mac can tap into a community that has grown to 130 million iOS gamers, enabling you to compare scores and achievements across both Mac and iOS games. Plus, a growing number of titles let you challenge your buddies on their iPhone and iPad, such as ?Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy.?

Faster, Smarter Browsing With Safari?

As someone who constantly has too many tabs open, the new Tab View is a godsend for me. Just pinch to zoom out, and you?ll see large thumbnails of all of your open tabs, making it easier to see what?s what and decide what to close.

Safari is smarter than Windows? Internet Explorer in other ways. The new unified address bar is another huge time-saver, which presents Top Sites, recommended Google Search results and bookmarks and your surfing history as you type.

Notifications All In One Place

While I like the way Windows 8 shows your notifications within its Live Tiles for apps, Mountain Lion?s Notification Center makes it easier to see all of your alerts at a glance. Notification Center is also highly customizable. You can choose how many alerts you want to display from each app and the order of how they appear. Plus, you can turn all of the notifications off with a click when you need to be heads down. Bonus: you can post right to Twitter and Facebook from this menu.

Mail VIPs: Never Miss an Email from Your Boss

This unsung feature of Mountain Lion makes it easy to set up an instant folder of messages for very important people, whether it?s your boss, spouse or anyone else whose emails you simply cannot miss.

All you have to do is star that person?s name from within a message and you?ll have a VIP folder. You can even tweak the settings so that you?ll only get Notifications when new messages from VIPs arrive.

It?s More Like Windows Than Windows 8

Recently, Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart issued this tweet: ?OS X Mountain Lion is a more natural upgrade from Windows 7 than moving to Windows 8.? There?s actually some truth to this comment because Windows 8 represents a radical user interface change for the world?s most popular desktop OS. Mountain Lion may borrow plenty of elements from iOS, from Launchpad to apps like Notes, but it?s still very much a traditional operating system. In Windows 8, the desktop is its own app, which may prove jarring to a lot of users. Mountain Lion could very well be that more familiar alternative.

Johnson, Palin and more join 'DWTS: All-Stars'

Bristol Palin, Shawn Johnson and Joey Fatone are all competing again on "DWTS."

By Ree Hines

It?s only been two months since wide-receiver-turned-hoofer Donald Driver claimed the coveted mirror ball trophy on ?Dancing With the Stars,? bringing a glittering end to the last season of the ballroom bash. But even though it hasn?t been a big wait, the anticipation for the upcoming season has been huge.

That?s because season 15 isn?t just another round of the same old show. It?s ?Dancing?s? long-awaited all-star season -- the one fans have hoping for and speculating about for ages.

Now that speculation is over. On Friday the returning competitors were revealed.

The ballroom alums soon set to take the dance floor again are:

  • Shawn Johnson
  • Bristol Palin
  • Pamela Anderson
  • Apolo Anton Ohno
  • Joey Fatone
  • Kelly Monaco
  • Gilles Marini
  • Emmitt Smith
  • Drew Lachey
  • Kirstie Alley
  • Helio Castroneves
  • Melissa Rycroft

But that?s not all! While those 12 celebs make up most of the official all-star cast, there?s one more returning soft shoe set to join them. Who?ll take spot No. 13? That?s up to ballroom fans. In a first-of-its-type twist for the show, ?Dancing? viewers are being asked to vote for the past participate of their choosing to fill the final spot. The choices include Sabrina Bryan, Carson Kressley or Kyle Massey.

Details on that twist are still to come on the official ?Dancing With the Stars? website.

Though partners have not yet been announced, executive producer Conrad Green told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Friday that the pros will be revealed on Aug. 13. But don't expect that all the stars will get the same pro they had before.

"Obviously, when you look at the stars that are coming back, it's impossible for everybody to have the same partner, so we're currently working that out," Green said. "We're trying to pair people based upon what we think is going to make the most intriguing season and make a brilliant season."

Green also explained how the producers chose this particular group to do "All Stars." "We took the view we wanted to do the best of the best. We wanted to represent many different seasons," he said. "For us, this is almost our version of 'The Avengers.' These were the superheroes of their particular seasons, and they're back."?

Though the cast will be familiar, don't expect the show to be exactly the same. Green teased that there will be some tweaks to the ballroom bash this season. For starters, he noted that the judges will likely have to be recalibrated a bit, "otherwise, we'll be starting with 9s and 10s right out of the box." He also hinted that the show might introduce a few new things to update the competition.

The season premieres Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on ABC. And for those of you who can't wait to see at least one these returning hopefuls on your small screen, keep your eye out for Shawn at the Olympics, where she's acting as TODAY.com's special correspondent.?

What do you think of the all-star picks? Did your favorites make the cut? Take our poll below and then go to our Facebook page and tell us who you?ll vote for to fill the last spot in the cast??

What do you think of the all-star lineup?

Insight: Separatist storm brewing on Kenya's coast

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Near the white sandy beaches along Kenya's coast where tourists sip cocktails in the sun, graffiti scrawled on walls proclaims 'Pwani si Kenya' or 'The Coast is not Kenya'.

The Swahili slogans are a call by an outlawed group for the coastal region, including a booming tourist industry and Mombasa, Kenya's oldest city and biggest port, to secede from East Africa's largest economy.

The separatist message preached by the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) has spread through mosques, churches, markets, coffee houses, text messages and Facebook.

MRC wants the coast, where centuries of Arab trade and influence left their mark and minarets show the predominance of Islam, to have its own flag, currency and president.

The campaign taps into deep local grievances over land ownership and employment being in the hands of outsiders, who have settled at the coast over the years from other regions of Kenya, west of the contested coastal belt.

"I am coastal by birth and right, yet I can't benefit from our own resources ... all the jobs are taken by them, people from upcountry," Joram Kahindi, 26, and a father of three, said at a rundown barber shop north of Mombasa.

"We need to be in control of our region," he said, turning up a Bob Marley reggae tune playing on his transistor radio.

MRC supporters threaten to boycott and disrupt voting on the coast in national elections scheduled for March if their demand for secession is not met by authorities in the capital Nairobi.

This could turn one of Kenya's best-known tourist havens into a potential flashpoint, fuelling wider fears of ethnic violence and riots during the elections.

More than 1,200 people were killed in bloody tribal clashes in Kenya that followed a disputed presidential vote in 2007.

"The MRC threat is the single biggest risk in next year's election," said Mzalendo Kibunjia, who heads a national agency formed to reconcile tribes after the violence five years ago.

The outlawed group's partisans, believed to number thousands, say while the coast is a jewel in Kenya's economy, many locals remain jobless and landless. Local schools and hospitals are run down and roads pitted with potholes.

If the coast were to secede, it would deny Kenya access to the Indian Ocean and transform it into a landlocked country.

President Mwai Kibaki has flatly rejected the MRC demand for secession, refusing any negotiations on this point.

Not far from Kahindi's barber shop, local businesswoman Phyllis Njeri, who is originally from central Kenya but has lived on the coast for more than 30 years, said she was afraid of becoming a target of the threatened MRC violence.

"If they come chasing people from upcountry, you can imagine how this wood will burn," said Njeri in her workshop crammed with timber and roofing sheets.

"Most of the local people at the coast support the MRC, and this makes us people from upcountry very anxious."

"MOB JUSTICE"

The MRC takes its name from Mombasa, the commercial hub of the coast and Kenya's second-largest city after Nairobi.

Mombasa draws tourists to its sun-drenched beaches and quaint old town, with its winding streets and Arab architecture of ornately carved doors and window frames.

Men wander into mosques clad in flowing white robes, while women wearing traditional black garments fill the busy markets.

The MRC, which says Mombasa would be the capital of independent 'Pwani', was outlawed in 2010 by Kenyan authorities along with 33 entities described as "organized criminal groups".

It has asked Kenya's courts to block the March elections and to reverse the ban on its activities, its leader told Reuters.

"There will be no peace, this I cannot hide from you. The coast will have no peace at all. Voting in the coast will not happen if there is no secession," MRC chairman Omar Mwamnwadzi said, speaking at his home south of Mombasa.

He spoke in Swahili, the national language of Kenya, where English is used for business. Swahili originally developed on the coast and borrows words from other languages such as Arabic.

"We will not allow elections here. It will be mob justice using rocks. Many will die," Mwamnwadzi said, surrounded by white-bearded elders and sitting barefoot on a mat under swaying palm trees. He wore black trousers and a faded blue T-shirt.

The MRC partisans have shown they are capable of violence.

In March, police at the coast arrested people it said were MRC members when they disrupted a mock poll exercise in Malindi, a tourist haven at the coast, injuring officers. Mwamnwadzi denied issuing orders for the attack.

The following month, a man said to be a supporter of the MRC was killed after being hit with a rock by a fellow protestor when dozens of its members stormed a Mombasa court hearing a case in which the separatists want to reverse a ban on its activities.

A ruling on MRC's court challenge is due on July 25.

Kenya has once before faced demands from separatists, when in the 1960s, ethnic Somalis in the northeast pushed for secession, seeking to be part of a 'Greater Somalia'.

Kenya's founding president Jomo Kenyatta ended their claims with a tough military crackdown that left many dead.

"We are also ready to die, we have suffered too long," Mwamnwadzi said, speaking calmly in a deep voice.

Aged 61, he can neither read nor speak English, and dropped out of school in grade four before later joining the army.

To back MRC's claims of a separate historical heritage for the coast, Mwamnwadzi cites an ancient treaty dating back to its rule by an Arabian Sultan based in Zanzibar.

MRC says it has documents of a 1963 accord signed by then Kenyan Prime Minister and later President Kenyatta and his Zanzibar counterpart Mohamed Shante, granting Kenya a 50-year lease over the coast. This would expire in June 2013, so returning the region to its indigenous people, the MRC argues.

But the Kenyan government and historians in Nairobi have dismissed the treaty as a forgery and MRC propaganda.

The government says that while the coast was ruled by a Sultan, it reverted back to mainland rule from Nairobi upon Kenya's independence from Britain in 1963.

Mwamnwadzi says he is inspired by successful past secessionist movements in South Sudan, Eritrea, Puntland and Somaliland that brought independence or autonomy to these territories and also by the ongoing uprising by an Islamist group in Zanzibar demanding to break away from Tanzania.

AL SHABAAB LINK?

Kenyan officials say MRC is infiltrated by fighters from al Qaeda-linked Islamist militant group al Shabaab, which has waged a five-year insurgency against Somalia's government since 2007.

Mwamnwadzi, who retired as a senior private from the Kenya Army in 1985, denies he has any ties with Islamist militants.

"We are Muslims, Christians and pagans who want social justice," he said.

He says he would like to set up an army for an independent coastal state if their campaign is successful.

There is evidence however that al Shabaab, which seeks to impose strict Sharia Islamic law in areas it controls, has recruited young men from Kenya's coast as well as in neighboring countries.

Phyllis Muema, who runs a youth community group at the coast, said young men had been trained in Somalia by al Shabaab and returned to the coast. Many now back MRC, she says.

"They may not have been recruited for the purposes of MRC, but they are in MRC and they have been trained," she said.

A wide-ranging survey carried out on MRC by researcher Paul Goldsmith found the movement had "near universal support" among the indigenous people at the coast.

"The MRC is not armed but could easily become so in the future," Goldsmith wrote.

LAND BATTLE

Kenyan security agents investigating the origin of the group, formed in 1999, believe it is backed by wealthy Arabs.

These security sources say the shadowy backers are reported to be based at the coast, around Africa and in the Middle East. They pay for the MRC's legal fees and also post bail to free members of the group arrested by police.

"The ordinary MRC member has been made to believe that the war is for secession, yet it is for the land. They want to scare people from upcountry and take control," one Kenyan security service agent, who asked not to be named, said.

Mwamnwadzi denies any links to Arab sponsors, local or foreign. Instead, he blames a highly centralized and unequal system of land allocation for leaving many on the coast destitute, and so fuelling popular support for the MRC.

Until recently, only the president could sanction the sale of beach land on Kenya's 500 km (300 miles) of coast.

This has meant that much of the sandy Kenyan shoreline stretching from Somalia to Tanzania is owned by the country's political elite, including the family of the late founding President Kenyatta.

His son Uhuru is a presidential hopeful in next year's polls.

Politicians at the coast said the MRC's secessionist message was making many in the ruling class uncomfortable.

"Who are the main owners of the beach land in the coast region? Now that these questions are being asked, everybody in government is feeling guilty and panicking," Najib Balala, a member of parliament and former tourism minister, said.

Balala, a former Mombasa mayor, said he believed violence was brewing.

INVESTMENTS, TRADE AT RISK

Any trouble on the coast could badly hit Kenya's multi-million-dollar tourism industry, already damaged by the kidnappings of Western female tourists from beach resorts at the coast by Somali gunmen.

It could also knock investment, trade and transport in Kenya's landlocked neighbors. Rwanda and Uganda rely on Mombasa port for imports of food, consumer goods and fuel.

Coastal hotel operators are closely watching developments.

"The MRC thing is worrying us big time. They are ... talking of seceding, that is dangerous talk," said Mohammed Hersi, who runs the Whitesands Hotel, the largest resort on the coast.

"Our worry is that it is sending negative vibes out there."

MRC leader Mwamnwadzi is fully aware of the potential impact of any unrest on tourism. "If tourists see chaos in this country, surely they will have to stay home," he said.

Many on the coast remember past election violence there. In 1997, local men in the south coast area of Likoni killed police officers and grabbed automatic weapons.

They went on the rampage, killing and forcibly evicting thousands of people from upcountry who had settled on the coast.

And memories of the inter-tribal bloodletting that shocked Kenyans and the world after the 2007 polls are still fresh.

Some local business owners from outside the coast region say they will be ready to fight back if threatened or attacked.

"I'm ready for them. I have two guns, a pistol in the living room and an AK-47 in my bedroom, let them come," said Tabu Wandera, 40, a former hotelier who now runs a restaurant and bar in Likoni.

Experts: Solid evidence in Hungary war crimes case

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) ? The evidence against a 97-year-old Hungarian man accused of abusing Jews and helping deport thousands during the Holocaust is much stronger than a similar case last year that ended in a high-profile acquittal, experts say.

Laszlo Csatary's role as a police officer and chief of an internment camp from where 12,000 Jews were deported to their deaths in Auschwitz and other Nazi death camps is amply documented and there are strong witness statements about his brutality, they said.

Authorities charged Csatary last week with "unlawful torture of human beings," accusing him of being present in 1944 when trains bound for death camps were loaded and sent on their way, regularly using a dog whip to strike detainees and in one case refusing to cut holes in a train car to allow people to breathe. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

"He ruled over life and death," said Adam Gellert, an expert in international criminal law who has been researching the Csatary case. "He deported people who were supposed to be spared and committed a series of sadistic acts."

Csatary's case was brought to the attention of Hungarian authorities in September by the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Efraim Zuroff, whose "Operation Last Chance" was launched in 2002, offering rewards in exchange for information about suspected Holocaust war criminals.

The program has sparked criticism from people opposed to paying informants? and has had mixed results.

A year ago, another elderly suspect found in Hungary by Zuroff, Sandor Kepiro, was acquitted of war crime charges by a Budapest court that ruled there was insufficient evidence, a decision that drew strong condemnation from Serbian and Jewish groups.

Prosecutors had charged that Kepiro, a former captain in a special security force, was involved in a 1942 raid by Hungarian forces in the northern Serbian town of Novi Sad during which over 1,200 mostly Jewish and Serb civilians were killed. But experts said there were significant doubts about his guilt.

The Wiesenthal Center "bit on a case where the evidence was not enough to determine from a historian's perspective how much responsibility Sandor Kepiro had in the Novi Sad massacre," said Laszlo Csosz, a historian at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest.

The prosecution of a man who sat through court sessions in a wheelchair, had serious hearing problems and was hospitalized during the proceedings "caused negative feelings about the proceedings in 99.5 percent of the people," Csosz said. Kepiro died in September at age 97, while the ruling was being appealed by both defense and prosecution.

Zuroff defended Kepiro's prosecution, saying he was certain the case would have been won on appeal.

"There's no question that there was enough evidence to bring Kepiro to justice," Zuroff said. "There was no problem with the legitimacy of the evidence, but the judge disqualified the evidence in a very selective manner."

Zuroff said that in contrast with the Kepiro case, there were witnesses to the 1944 events and Csatary's alleged acts who are still alive and expected to testify.

"There are several people available and all that information was given to the prosecutors by me," Zuroff said by telephone from Jerusalem.

Csatary's case is also different because his role and responsibility as the commander of a ghetto in the Slovakian city of Kosice, at the time a part of Hungary, is well documented, Csosz said.

Gellert, the criminal law expert, said that the prosecutors probably came under political pressure to press charges in the Kepiro case.

"It was only during the trial that it became clear that the charges were unfounded." Geller said. "In the Csatary case, there are many more documents available ... which increases the likelihood of putting forth a more solid case."

"Compared to the Kepiro trial, this is a much, much stronger case," said Gellert, who described Csatary as an "enthusiastic enforcer."

Csatary was convicted in absentia for war crimes in Czechoslovakia in 1948 and sentenced to death. He arrived in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia the following year, became a Canadian citizen in 1955 and worked as an art dealer in Montreal.

He appears to have been living quietly in Budapest since 1997, when, Canadian authorities say, he left the country before they had the chance to decide his fate in a deportation hearing alleging he had failed to provide information about his Nazi ties.

Still, there are questions. Laszlo Karsai, a historian at the University of Szeged in southern Hungary, called attention to the fact that while Csatary was condemned to death in Czechoslovakia, two of his superiors, the Kosice mayor and the police chief, were only sentenced to prison in Hungary.

"What can be proven in court and what is a historical truth ... are two completely different things," said Karsai, the son of a Holocaust survivor.

Karsai, who has been very critical of Zuroff's methods, stressed the importance of keeping a historical perspective, saying that though there is testimony about his sadistic treatment of people there is no proof he knew they were heading to their deaths unless he testifies so himself.

"To know in 2012 that the trains were going to Auschwitz is one thing, but for a police officer in 1944 to know that the trains were going to Auschwitz is another ? and even if he knew, how can we prove that he knew what Auschwitz was?," Karsai asked.

HTC confirms Jelly Bean updates for One X, XL and S, we feign surprise

Android Central

We had the first hints of an announcement on HTC Jelly Bean updates yesterday by way of Aussie carrier Telstra, but now the manufacturer is sending out a statement confirming what many already expected with regards to Android 4.1 upgrades. Unsurprisingly, HTC says the One X, One S and One XL (that's the Snapdragon S4-powered One X with LTE, sold on AT&T as the One X) are all due for a bump up to the latest version of Android --

"We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean."

So it looks like there'll be more updated to follow, and we'd certainly expect phones like the EVO 4G LTE, Dinc 4G LTE and (maybe) Rezound to be among the list of HTC phones that eventually get Jelly Bean. Fingers crossed, guys. In the meantime, check out our predictions of which devices will be getting Android 4.1 in the months ahead.

FOR KIDS: Bad news for big bird

Lead poisoning, which nearly killed off California condors, still threatens the birds

Web edition : Friday, July 20th, 2012

Thirty years ago, the California condor came dangerously close to extinction. Biologists took action, and their efforts worked. The big, bald birds lived, and their numbers grew ? from 22 in 1982 to several hundred today.?

But the bird?s apparent success story may be misleading, a new study finds. By studying blood and feathers from condors in the wild, researchers have confirmed that the birds are suffering a slow poisoning.

(AP) ? The Olympic torch has begun its tour of London ? and to everyone's relief, the weather is cooperating.

After weeks of unseasonably chilly temperatures and miserable rain, the sun came out Saturday as thousands of people turned out to watch the flame begin its seven-day trip of the Olympic host city.

The torch arrived late Friday in the city with a dramatic entrance, abseiled from a helicopter by a Royal Marine to the Tower of London on the shore of the River Thames.

After a night locked inside the Jewel House of the 11th century landmark, the torch started a journey through London that took it from a historic ship to a shiny new shopping mall.

From the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the torch was carried to the Cutty Sark, a newly restored 140-year-old ship docked in the Thames.

Nadia Comaneci, the legendary Romanian gymnast who won nine Olympic medals in the 1976 and 1980 games, and former basketball player John Amaechi took the torch to the roof of the North Greenwich Arena, the venue for the gymnastics events and basketball finals.

"You know it doesn't seem like it's been 36 years ago," Comaneci, the first female gymnast to be awarded a perfect 10 score in an Olympic gymnastics event, told the BBC. "It's hard to believe that what I've done then people still remember. So I'm very honored to be here."

Phillips Idowu, a champion triple jumper for Team Great Britain, later took the torch to the Westfield mall, Europe's biggest, next to the Olympic Park.

Saturday's torch relay also included stints from London's youngest and oldest torchbearers: 12-year-old Chester Chambers, and 101-year-old Fauja Singh. Like most other torchbearers, they were nominated by their communities.

The torch, which has already traveled across Britain for more than 60 days, will continue to tour London's streets until it ends its journey at the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony in the capital on July 27.

Dollar stores not just for cheapskates anymore

Mark Lennihan / AP

ShopSmart surveyed 1,500 women and found that about 76 percent of them say they shopped at a dollar store in the past year. Three out of four are going there more often than they did in the past.

By Herb Weisbaum, Today contributor

Want to save money on household products like cereal, napkins, soap and toothpaste? Then maybe you should check out your local dollar store.

According to a just-released survey of dollar store prices by ShopSmart magazine (from the publisher of Consumer Reports), you can save a bundle there on grocery products and household items.

"Dollar stores are no longer the junky outlets they used to be and there are big savings to be had ? even on brand-name products," said Lisa Lee Freeman, ShopSmart?s editor-in-chief.

Big-chain dollar stores like Dollar General, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree are bright and cheery. They have a wide variety of merchandise. Some even accept coupons. Maybe that?s why more people ? and not just those on a limited budget ? are shopping at dollar stores these days.

?Upscale shoppers are going to the dollar store, too,? said ShopSmart?s senior editor Jody Rohlena. ?They?re looking to save money just like everyone else.?

By the way, not everything at a dollar store is a $1 or less. At Dollar General, it?s about 25 percent of the merchandise. Most items cost less than $10, although you may find a few seasonal items at a higher price.

ShopSmart surveyed 1,500 women and found that about 76 percent say they shopped at a dollar store in the past year. Three out of four are going there more often than they did in the past.

Their favorite things to buy are party supplies, paper and plastic goods (such as napkins, cups and flatware), cleaning supplies, toiletries (like soap and toothpaste) and storage containers.

ShopSmart?s mystery shoppers went to Dollar General and Family Dollar to check prices on 38 everyday products. Then they compared those prices with Target, Walmart and some supermarkets.

?Walmart had the lowest prices on most items,? Rohlena said. ?Supermarkets had the highest prices by far. But dollar stores were really competitive.?

ShopSmart found big savings ? as much as 28 percent ? on some brand-name products at the dollar stores when compared to supermarket prices. The best deals were on two-liter bottles of Coke, Lipton tea bags, Planters mixed nuts, Heinz ketchup and Jif peanut butter.

But you can save even more on the store?s private-label brands.? That?s right --?dollar stores are developing their own brands of oatmeal, cereal, bathroom cleaner, flour, even cranberry juice cocktail.

ShopSmart found that these store brands are 29 percent less, on average, than national brands. That?s a better deal than the 25 percent you can save on store brands at Walmart and supermarkets or the 15 percent savings at Target.

But not everything at the dollar store is a bargain.

?Don?t buy coffee and don?t buy Tide detergent there,? Rohlena tells me. ?We don?t know why, but those were the worst deals.?

The Maxwell House Original Roast ground coffee (11.5 ounces) was $5.06 at Family Dollar versus $3.89 at Walmart. The 100-ounce Tide detergent was $14.31 at Dollar General and only $11.97 at Walmart.

Note: ShopSmart suggests you check the expiration date before buying food or medication in a dollar store. Items with expiration dates (such as perishable and frozen foods) were the No. 1 thing survey respondents said they never buy at a dollar store. The editors advise against buying off-brand vitamins at these stores.

The bottom line
Dollar stores have come a long way in the last few years. If you haven?t been in one recently, you may be missing out on significant savings. The merchandise is better, the selection is greater and the shopping experience is significantly improved. To get the most bang for your buck, check the store brands.

The big dollar stores have retail Web sites, but many of the products sold online are only available by the case. The editors at ShopSmart say if it?s a product you use regularly, maybe toilet paper, buying a large quantity can be an economical way to stock up.

Inhofe decries military budget cuts

Sequestration is the process by which automatic appropriation cuts go into effect if Congress cannot reach a budget agreement. Under current law, sequestration will reduce current spending levels by $109 billion on Jan. 2 unless Congress reaches agreement for $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years.

Half the reduction must come from military spending and half from nonmilitary spending.

Inhofe, Sullivan and other Republicans say this unfairly - and unwisely - targets the military and will result in as many as 1 million lost jobs.

"I don't think President Obama fully understands the impact these devastating defense cuts will have on our military capabilities or our economy," Sullivan said after the House voted 414-2 to require the Obama administration to produce within 90 days an explanation of how it plans to carry out sequestration.

Inhofe, speaking on the Senate floor during discussion of sequestration, said the process is part of the Obama administration's overall strategy to degrade the U.S. military.

He said Obama's budget projections call for $500 billion in cuts to the Defense Department over the next decade in addition to the $500 billion due under sequestration.

"Let's not forget how we got into this mess in the first place," Inhofe said. "We have a president who has added $1 trillion to our debt each year. And our least properly funded area is the military."

Inhofe encouraged defense contractors to issue layoff notices immediately in order to get the attention of their employees and their communities, even if the layoffs wouldn't occur until next year if at all.

Democrats say they, too, don't want sequestration and that Republicans wanted the deep defense cuts in the sequestration agreement to use as leverage. Democrats, though, are also using them as leverage to get Republicans to accept expiration of tax cuts for high-income Americans.

Obama, said Sullivan, "is playing a dangerous game of political chicken at the expense of our national and economic security."
