UFC 144: Ben Henderson dethrones Frankie Edgar in Japan
After five grueling rounds, Ben "Smooth" Henderson dethroned Frankie Edgar, and is now the new UFC Lightweight champion.
Beaming with confidence, Henderson dominated Edgar during all five rounds, giving the champ the worst beating of his MMA career. Edgar responded with his second to none heart and endurance, but it was not enough to withstand Ben Henderson physical power and size advantage throughout the fight.

A prominent scientist who focused his work on global warming's threat to water resources has acknowledged that under false pretenses he acquired, then leaked to the press and bloggers, documents detailing contributions from donors and the 2012 budget for the Heartland Institute ? a Chicago-based organization that argues that global warming poses no threat.?
Skip to next paragraphIn a Feb. 20 blog entry on the Huffington Post website, Peter Gleick, who heads the Pacific Institute, based in Oakland, Calif., said he received an institute strategy memo earlier this year from an anonymous source. In an attempt to verify the information the memo contained, Mr. Gleick wrote, ?I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else's name.?
The documents he received included budget allocations for climate-related projects, including the development of a K-12 curriculum on global warming.
One researcher's actions don't reflect the activities of the broader range of climate scientists, some analysts caution. But they also say that the incident could further polarize an already polarized climate-policy debate while undermining public confidence in scientists in general.
Heads of scientific organizations have decried what they see as a rising tide of anti-science in the US and are encouraging scientists ?to shift into culture-warrior mode,? says Matthew Nisbet, a social scientist at American University in Washington who studies the ongoing debate over climate and energy policy.
Surveys indicate that ?along with the Supreme Court and the military, science is our most trusted institution,? he says. ?And climate scientists, across all demographic groups, hold high levels of trust, especially among young people of all political backgrounds.?
?Scientists are being mobilized as political combatants, which they are not trained to do, which most of them are uncomfortable doing, and which will significantly tarnish their image,? he says.
Whatever the longer-term effects might be, the Gleick affair has lit up the climate blogosphere.
Some who advocate action to combat climate change equate Gleick's actions with those of whistleblowers, who make sensitive information public despite the legal and personal risks they may face.
Others are more guarded. Kevin Knobloch, president of the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington, notes that ?it's wrong to obtain documents under false pretenses, just as it was wrong for hackers to have taken scientists' e-mails from the University of East Anglia? ? a reference to ?Climategate? in 2009.
In that case, a still-unknown individual or group took thousands of e-mails and documents ? some highlighting hardball politics within the climate science community ? from computers at the university's Climate Research Unit and released them to the internet.
Still, he says in a prepared statement, ?Our criticism of the Heartland Institute's strategy of spreading misinformation about climate science still stands.?

CHICAGO, February 22, 2012 The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) today announced major changes in how the nation's medical residency programs will be accredited in the years ahead, putting in place an outcomes-based evaluation system where the doctors of tomorrow will be measured for their competency in performing the essential tasks necessary for clinical practice in the 21st century.
Summarized in a paper published in the February 22, 2012 online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, the ACGME's next accreditation system for graduate medical education (GME) will be fully implemented by 2014. When the new system goes into effect, each accredited medical residency program must demonstrate that its residents have the core competencies and clinical skills to deliver quality patient care and respond to rapid developments in health care delivery. The ACGME's new system will cover more than 9,000 medical residency programs across the country.
"Equipping the doctors of tomorrow with the clinical skills and perspectives needed to promote patient safety and quality and to respond to the rapid developments in healthcare delivery are the ACGME's prime objectives in implementing a 'next accreditation system' for graduate medical education in the U.S," said Thomas Nasca, MD, MACP, chief executive officer of the ACGME. "There is now widespread consensus that moving to an outcomes-based accreditation system will prepare physicians to deliver quality patient care and be skilled in evidence-based medicine, team-based care, care coordination, and shared decision-making all critical to practicing medicine in an increasing complex health care system."
The ACGME's next accreditation system is consistent with recommendations made by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and such respected bodies as the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. Under the ACGME's next accreditation system:
- Medical residents and fellows must demonstrate competency in six core areas -- patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and communication.
- Teaching institutions are required to develop and publish the specific learning outcomes residents must demonstrate as they progress through training
- Institutions must submit reports to the ACGME every six months that document each resident's accomplishments in meeting benchmarks for physician competence.
- The ACGME will update the accreditation status of each program yearly based on trends in key performance parameters.
New Accreditation Model Is Result of Multi-Staged Planning Process
The development of the ACGME's next accreditation system began in 1998 when the organization launched its Outcome Project to improve resident physicians' ability to operate effectively in current and evolving health care delivery systems. Working with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the ACGME developed the core competencies to be required for all physicians, turned these competencies into accreditation program requirements, and mounted a multi-year program to implement the new accreditation requirements in all teaching institutions.
With the Outcome Project as the foundation, in 2009 the ACGME began the development of the next accreditation system and in 2011 approved its phased implementation. During this two-year period, the ACGME conferred with more than 40 medical specialty organizations, elicited the views of the organization's Council of Review Committees (which includes the chairs of its 27 Review Committees) and conducted a thorough review of the changing health care delivery system.
"In designing this new system for accrediting medical residency programs, [the] ACGME has created a new framework for thinking about and organizing graduate medical education in this country," Dr. Nasca said. "Our goal is simple to create a system of physician education that can rapidly adapt to new knowledge, technology, and capabilities, and is responsive to the public's needs." He added, "we want to unleash the creativity of America's medical educators while assuring ourselves and the public of the quality of educational outcomes."
System Phased in Over Next Two Years
The next accreditation system will be phased in over a two-year period based on the following timetable:
- 2012 training for the Review Committees that will redesign the accreditation programs for seven medical specialties (emergency medicine, internal medicine, neurological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, diagnostic radiology, and urological surgery)
- July 2013 the seven specialties implement the next accreditation system and the ACGME begins training the Review Committees for the remaining specialties
- July 2014 next accreditation system is implemented by all specialties
The ACGME expects the new system will reduce the burden on teaching institutions while enhancing the profession's accountability to the public for the effectiveness of GME. Moreover, the ACGME's new system will incorporate the accreditation body's supervision and patient safety standards enacted in July 2011, which set requirements for teamwork, clinical responsibilities, communication, professionalism, duty hours, personal responsibility, and transitions of care. With the Outcome Project as the foundation, in 2009 the ACGME began the development of the next accreditation system and in 2011 approved its phased implementation. During this two-year period, the ACGME conferred with more than 40 medical specialty organizations, elicited the views of the organization's Council of Review Committees (which includes the chairs of its 27 Review Committees) and conducted a thorough review of the changing health care delivery system.
"In designing this new system for accrediting medical residency programs, [the] ACGME has created a new framework for thinking about and organizing graduate medical education in this country," Dr. Nasca said. "Our goal is simple to create a system of physician education that can rapidly adapt to new knowledge, technology, and capabilities, and is responsive to the public's needs." He added, "we want to unleash the creativity of America's medical educators while assuring ourselves and the public of the quality of educational outcomes."
System Phased in Over Next Two Years
The next accreditation system will be phased in over a two-year period based on the following timetable:
- 2012 training for the Review Committees that will redesign the accreditation programs for seven medical specialties (emergency medicine, internal medicine, neurological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, diagnostic radiology, and urological surgery)
- July 2013 the seven specialties implement the next accreditation system and the ACGME begins training the Review Committees for the remaining specialties
- July 2014 next accreditation system is implemented by all specialties
The ACGME expects the new system will reduce the burden on teaching institutions while enhancing the profession's accountability to the public for the effectiveness of GME. Moreover, the ACGME's new system will incorporate the accreditation body's supervision and patient safety standards enacted in July 2011, which set requirements for teamwork, clinical responsibilities, communication, professionalism, duty hours, personal responsibility, and transitions of care. The system will enable secure, mobile networked communications worldwide, in even the most-austere environments. MUOS consists of four geostationary earth orbit satellites with an additional on-orbit spare, and a fiber optic terrestrial network connecting four ground stations around the globe. Each satellite will feature two payloads that enable the system to integrate with the existing architecture while upgrading military users to the new wideband code division multiple access?system, which will provide mobile warfighters point-to-point and netted communications services at enhanced data rates and priority-based access to on-demand voice, video and data transfers.
The new waveform is termed the MUOS Common Air Interface (CAI), a Software Communications Architecture compliant modulations technique for the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) terminals. User terminals?will be?in fact provided by the U.S. military under the JTRS program, with an emphasis on handheld, soldier-worn units. For users, the MUOS system will provide familiar cellular phone-like services with the satellites acting as very tall ?towers? to allow warfighters on the ground to communicate directly with each other and their commanders virtually anywhere in the world.

Additionally, MUOS will provide access to select Defense Information System Network services, a voice and data capability that has not been available to UHF MILSATCOM users on prior systems. For satellite telemetry, tracking and command, MUOS will use the existing control system operated by the NavalSatelliteOperationsCenter at Pt. Mugu, California with the Air Force Satellite Control Network as a back-up.
When MUOS is fielded it will serve a mixed terminal population. Some users will have terminals only able to support the legacy waveforms while other users will have newer terminal able to support the MUOS CAI. In anticipation of this, each MUOS satellite carries a legacy payload?that will continue to support legacy terminals, allowing for a more gradual transition to the MUOS WCDMA waveform.
For the time being, development of the MUOS waveform remains on track for completion in the third quarter of 2012. By year-end, the MUOS capability will be available on the General Dynamics'?AN/PRC-155 manpack radio, the first MUOS terminal that will be available to soldiers. The AN/PRC-155?is a two-channel, software-defined radio capable of network-centric connectivity and legacy interoperability, supporting advanced (SRW, MUOS) and current-force (SINCGARS, SATCOM, HF, EPLRS, etc.) waveforms.
Other radio vendors are keeping close tabs on General Dynamics? progress developing the MUOS waveform through the JTRS Open Information Repository, a resource designed to link vendors to open-source software initiatives. Harris, for example,?plans to provide MUOS capability through its Falcon?III AN/PRC-117G tactical satellite radios. Those software-defined, multiband radios used in ground vehicles and command posts were redesigned in 2010 to become MUOS-compatible.
